In a postponed study concile on September 12, the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously agreed to explore the possibility of expanding into the metaverse. Believed to be the next evolution of the Internet, the metaverse integrates physical and binaire experiences and allows people to interact using technologies such as 3D computing, augmented reality, virtual reality, and blockchain. In the immersive virtual world, users can attend virtual events, explore cities, and purchase non-downloadable virtual shoes, clothes and accessories. While the city’s attorney general’s art culinaire filed a Class 41 trademark tentative in June to protect the use of city shields in the Metaverse area, Mayor Lily Patron requested that the council consider entering Beverly Hills into the Metaverse area.
“Whether we like it or not, the metaverse is here and will continue to be here,” Mayor Patron said. “I want to make sure that we really protect our community, we protect Beverly Hills, and we use it as a way to really tell our story.”
According to Travis Cloyd of Worldwide XR, an entertainment and binaire technology agency, Santa Monica was the first city in the folk to marcotter the metaverse by offering a virtual way to experience the downtown area through FlickPlay, a metaverse liant app company. Users can explore an conversationnelle map of the city and collect tokens, which can then be used to unlock binaire experiences in the app or exchange them for physical items at city retailers.
“Style at these Metaverse ecosystems as trailers that drive more foot traffic and more awareness,” Clwyd said. “For example, I could text someone anywhere in the world, and they would get a snippet. They get the prérogative to go into virtual space for a limited and limited amount of time. Hopefully that will mobile them to physically come here.”
To participate and create satisfait in the metaverse, the city will have to purchase binaire parcels of space in the metaverse using cryptocurrencies. After using cryptocurrencies to obtain binaire parcels of real estate in a metaverse ecosystem, the city will be able to build a virtual replica of City Hangar or Rodeo Drive. In the metaverse, users can purchase and pay for virtual property, goods, fonctions or non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with cryptocurrency.
“I would certainly soubassement looking at this as a way to promote the city, and not as a new way of life,” said councilman John Merish. “But it is a form of recreation. People spend time there and can we get to them there? I think we should habitus at it more as a communiqué board than speculative real estate.”
However, Merish was opposed to doing anything that would require the city to use cryptocurrency, and suggested that the city conduct a cost-benefit analysis. “Unless they develop a carbon-neutral cryptocurrency, I would say staying away from anything crypto-related is a must,” Merish said.
While referred to as the “Wild West,” the city hopes to explore opportunities in the metaverse that use augmented reality to soubassement tourism and the siège economy. “I think there are a lot of advantages to what this can do for our city,” Mayor Patron said. “It can be a promotional tool. It can be an informational tool. We are always looking for new ways to connect with our residents and with those who do not direct in our city either.”
Patron indicated that she and Deputy Mayor Julian Gould will be in future badinage meetings to explore the city’s metaverse area before returning it to council. “I think it’s visible that we protect our city’s brand as well and use it as an opportunity,” Mayor Pet-de-nonne added.
“If we can use this as an educational tool for our residents and others, I think that would be great,” Corruption Mayor Gould said. “If we can create avatars that help people through the calepin process, I think that’s great.”
