Common disease in humans and dogs: LeishmaniasisBig Sivas Haber | News from Sivas | News

Zoonoses, considered a public health problem in our country as in the whole world, are defined as diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Transmission of zoonotic diseases to humans occurs through direct or indirect contact with infected animals. disease at the same time; It can also be transmitted to humans by vectors such as fleas, ticks and sandflies.

Common disease in humans and dogs: leishmaniasis

One of the most common zoonotic diseases today is leishmaniasis, also known as oriental boil. Leishmaniasis, a disease caused by different types of single-celled parasites of the genus Leishmania, is carried and transmitted by the female blood-sucking sandfly, also called scavenger or sandfly.

Veterinarians carry out important projects both by the ministry and by non-governmental organizations on awareness, treatment and methods of prevention of leishmaniasis observed in humans and dogs (dog, fox, jackal, wolf, etc. ).

The latest of the studies conducted in this context was carried out in Izmir with the cooperation of the Association of Veterinarians of the Municipality, the Turkish Association of Parasitology and Ege University, with contributions from MSD Animal Health and from Yeniçağ Veterinary Pharmacy Warehouse.

At the meeting where current information about Leishmaniasis disease was conveyed, Professor of Ege University Medical School, Department of Parasitology. Dr. Yusuf Ozbel, prof. Dr. Seray Töz, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Aydın Adnan Menderes University, Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Gultekin, Dr. Metin Pekağırbaş and the member of the Association of Veterinarians of the municipality, the veterinarian Duygu Aküzüm, participated as speakers.

It was emphasized that the fight against zoonoses requires a “multidisciplinary” approach and was held within the framework of the “One Health” approach, scientists interested in human and animal health took part.

Sandflies, known as sandflies, carry the disease.

Two clinical types of leishmaniasis, difficult to see with the naked eye, are seen in humans in Turkey. Cutaneous leishmaniasis, known as oriental boil, and visceral leishmaniasis, known as kala-azar.

Oriental boil is a skin condition that can heal on its own without treatment, but leaves a permanent mark. However, kala azar, which is mostly seen in children, can even lead to death if left untreated. The disease that occurs in dogs and other dogs is called canine leishmaniasis.

The species of sandflies that cause both diseases are found in almost all regions of Turkey. The evidence that parasite-carrying patients and dogs have been found in all provinces studied so far puts Turkey among the high-risk countries for both diseases.

Leismaniasis is an insidious disease

After the incubation symptoms, the period of infection can usually extend over several years. In dogs, it can spread to any part of the body, almost to most organs.

In dogs infected with this disease, all visceral or systemic diseases are observed with dermatological signs. When determining treatment processes for leishmaniasis in dogs, alternative treatments can be applied taking into account the complaints caused by the dog. This disease becomes successfully manageable when treated on time and properly.

For this reason, it is emphasized that dogs should be taken for regular veterinary checkups and general health checks should be carried out regularly.

Leishmaniasis can be avoided

Taking preventive measures against leishmaniasis becomes more important for the common health of humans and dogs, because although treatments are possible, they are laborious and expensive, and on the other hand, because of the possibility of recurrence after some time.

There are effective methods of prevention against the disease. For example; Dogs are also recommended to wear pest control collars, which provide long-term protection against sandfly bites, with its repellent, anti-nutritional, paralyzing and lethal properties against related parasites. Protective collars protect the health of dogs and family members.
